I absolutely love this CD. She is now one of my favorite artists, and definitely one of my favorite albums. Her beautiful voice mixed with the compelling and deep lyrics of life, love and relationships is to not be heard lightly. She is definitely someone I would consider a rising star and a must have in your musical collection.

Buoyed by the springy, Motown-ish single "Love Song," Sara Bareilles's major-label debut (and second full-length album) has brought the songwriter/pianist some well-deserved attention and a place on the Billboard charts. With a clear, expressive (and hardly little) voice that glides effortlessly from alto to soprano, Bareilles conveys vulnerability and wisdom in lyrics that speak honestly about relationships from a woman's point of view. Her piano-playing and songwriting veer from Billy Joel bounce to Fiona Apple angst, but it's all held together by a commanding sense of melody, and a lovely, pristine production.

Whether it be in a month or in a year, I have no doubt that you are going to hear about Sara Bareilles. You may already have heard her songs in various movies including "Monster-in-Law," "Loving Annabelle," and "Girl Play," as well as several television shows, and I guarantee you that you will hear more!

Sara's voice has a quality in it that is rare these days. She's Norah Jones, if Norah Jones were Fiona Apple and Emm Gryner with Sarah McLachlan's vocal warmth, and yet she is like nobody you can think of. You could listen to her sing a capella and you'd be happy. The first time I saw her perform, she had the entire bar silent during her last few songs (with just the keyboard and her voice) -- which is impressive for that venue, since there are inevitably a few talkers during most sets.

Careful Confessions is Sara's first official release, and it is a great collection of studio and live tracks. Standouts include "Gravity" (which you'll probably recognize since it seems to be all over the place in movies and TV), "Love on the Rocks" (which was in Monster-in-Law), "Come Round Soon," "City," "Fairytale," and "Red." My absolute favorite song on the album is "Fairytale," a witty and sarcastic spin on some of your least favorite chauvenist tales. I also love City; it's beautiful and for some reason the words makes me think of the series premiere of the television show "Angel" (if you've seen it, you know what I mean). "Red" is another favorite, as it's quite catchy.

As a gifted singer and a versatile pianist with no formal training, Sara Bareilles burst onto the pop scene with a naturally skilled voice ranging from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. At age 18, she left the Redwood forests of her hometown, Eureka, CA, in pursuit of the big city lights of Los Angeles. Although she attended UCLA's Communication Studies program, Bareilles spent the majority of her spare time studying her new environment and writing poetry and songs about the busy surroundings. After graduating, she spent the next three years performing those songs at open-mike nights, slowly building her confidence as a musician before playing local venues and festivals. In 2003, she co-produced her first demo, Careful Confessions, and became enthralled with recording techniques. Eager to go back to the studio and create a second full-length album, she started shopping her CD around and signed a deal with Epic Records in April 2005. Producer Eric Rosse took her under his wing the following February and the two spent a little over a year perfecting the orchestration -- nearly half of the songs had formerly appeared on Careful Confessions and a new batch of tracks was carefully constructed in order to make her first major-label release as strong as possible. The lyrical themes of the album, entitled Little Voice and released in July 2007, covered her past relationships, insecurities, and inner battles with trying to trust her instincts.
